In their small but private crew quarters, Cathalina and Toru sat next to one another, holding hands. Toru stroked the back of her hand with the tips of his fingers as he listened.

She watched his hand move. “She was so angry at me. Said she didn’t know me anymore. I don’t understand it. What did I do wrong?”

“Are you just venting about this fight, or do you want an actual answer? Not that I think you did anything wrong,” he added quickly.

“I want you to make me feel better.”

Toru gazed at her face with adoration. “You know I’ve never stopped you from seeing your sister. It’s not your fault she married into such a family. You two have always been able to see past our family differences, and I love you for it. You did nothing wrong.”

Cathalina sighed and slumped in her seat. “It was more to not talk about Falk versus Konsa issues rather than to agree to disagree.”

“That’s just it, love. She’s angry because her husband’s angry. She attacked you personally because she had nothing else to go on. The Konsa family lost their attempt, at least for the moment, to do what they believe is correct, even if it’s wrong.” He tilted his head. “You two will make up. You always do. Siblings never, ever have a perfect relationship. Siblings fight. Then they make up. That’s one of the golden rules of life. You should see some of the fights I have with my siblings.”

“I said some cruel things, too. I didn’t mean them, but I was so hurt,” she muttered, sounding tired and wounded at the same time. “She won’t accept any of my messages.” She wiped at her face.

Toru nodded but didn’t respond. He put his arm about her. It was time to settle in close and listen.

“Also, you’re right,” she continued, leaning against him. “We ‘won’ for whatever version of that word you want to use. But, I still feel terrible.”

“Do you know why?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you want to tell me?”

Cathalina shook her head. “Not really. Suffice it to say I was cruel and I shouldn’t have been. I should’ve been the better person. I wasn’t.”

He squeezed her shoulders. “Whatever you said, it will pass. Give it time. Time heals. Eventually, she’ll forgive you. After we’re orbiting Pulse IV…” He paused. “Or have stepped foot on the planet where she can see what we’re so close to having, and that her way would lose that to not only us but all our children and their children to come…”

She grimaced. “That’s a long time from now. If ever.”

“Maybe she’s so upset because she knows we’re right and she can’t ever express that publicly. She has to be angry on her husband’s behalf, no matter what her feelings are….” Toru paused, grimacing. “I’m making this about the family feud again and not about you and your sister, aren’t I?”

Glancing up at him, she smiled a wan smile. “Yeah. A bit.”

“I’m sorry. I’m not very good at this. I’m trying.
